R.A.S. Intruder ATX Review
Presentation
-Looks nice. Is ready to take CO2 or HPA. Comes stock with expansion chamber and good barrel.
-Look like every other spyder .
Height (w/o drop, no hopper) 7.5 Height (w/ cp flames drop, no hopper): 12 in
Width: 1 in
Length (no barrel, from lpr to back of the bolt): 9 in
Weight (only the gun): 2.2 lbs
-Comes in Black, Silver, Blue, Green, Gold, Purple, Orange and Red.
-The tray is a little off color from the body with the blue bko's
- Newer bko's(ones w/ serial numbers and non-oring detents) have the 2003 style grip frame which is a little more ergonomic then the older trigger frame
-Different types of milling are: Older stock like mine in the pics, Murder Inc.(flames) and the New stock milling
Main Features:
-Stock Chip= 14 bps; W/ upgraded chip( Chaos chip, Tantrum chip)= has been tested up to 17 bps
-Electro-pnuematic operation- meaning that there is no hammer and sear, which over time wears down. For example all of the E-spyders are not Electro-pnuematic, they are just Blowback guns on electronic grip frames. This causes their performance as well as overall marker life to be decreased. Although, I don't want to turn this review into a "spyder bashing" article so I'll veer away from that.
- Low pressure operated- runs at 200-300 psi
- Double trigger with two adjustment points (on 2003 frames there are three). Unfortunately I've found that the trigger does have some side to side movement on it that can be quite irritating.
- Field strippable- pull out the pin holding the bolt in and you can take the bolt out. This allows you to clean the whole inside of the gun. This is very useful when you get one of those weak shelled balls broken in your breech.
- Comes with 6in piece of macro line as well as two 90 degree fittings
Accuracy:
-With the stock barrel, I'm said to say is pretty bad. I've seen worse but anything is better then the stock barrel, I would recommend a new barrel to be the newest upgrade. I would say with the stock barrel (only 11in) it is accurate up to 50 ft after that it will curve (Also you need to take into effect the, type of paintballs, hopper and even the weather)
Velocity:
-Even though it goes hand in hand with accuracy, the velocity on the bko even with the stock reg is great. I recommend a low-pressure tank because bko's are low-pressure guns, duh. I set my reg once and all day the fps was within 280 by about +/- 10, which I felt was pretty damn good with the stock regulator. Although if your running co2 (not recommended) then you'll need a new regulator in-order to remain at a good velocity. So number one rule with the bko is if you don't have or can't afford a nitro system, then I would recommend holding off until you can.
Upgrades:
1. Barrel- I would recommend either the Boomstick or 2002 All American, both are great looking and lest I forget great barrels for any player. If your budget can't handle a barrel like that I would suggest the custom products barrels.
2. Ball Detent- The older bko's have the Autococker style(oring style) ball detents and the stock one for the bko is horrible, I nearly wanted to burn mine and piss on the ashes. I'd say if you have an older style bko then this is a definite upgrade. If your buying one new then you have nothing to worry about because they come with a better ball detent.
3. Hopper- If you don't have a hopper that can go at least 12-13 bps then it's a good idea because its kind of like have a Porsche and putting regular in it instead of Plus, you get what I mean? I use a ricochet and I like its overall looks as well as its performance. Expect to pay about 100 bucks for a good one.
4. Trigger- The side to side play is a little annoying so I would recommend a new trigger. There's a couple to choose from: The Vaporworks trigger and the Check-it trigger, both are about 30 dollars.
5. Bolt- A new bolt is always a good upgrade for a high-quality marker like this, I woud recommend the vapor bolt II, because of its price (45) and its great reputation.
6. Chip- last but not least we come to the issue of upgrading your chip, this comes with many advantages such as increase rate of fire as well as the modes it provides( Semi, Turbo, Responsive Trigger, Full-auto, and a few other depending on the chip). My advice to those who are deciding between the two chips (Chaos Chip and Tantrum Chaos Chip) on the market for bushmasters is that the Tantrum chip is basically the Chaos chip with a few upgrades such as unfiltered semi(doesn't factor out the bounces and other abnormalities with the trigger pull) and tantrum mode(full auto at 3 ball burst with a pause for the hopper to catch up.
Checklist
- You need the gun itself, duh.
- Drop forward and asa or a Cradle with built in asa
- Nitro System or Anti siphon co2 tank (you should have a Palmer Stablizer reg)
- Hopper (I recommend a 12volt/Ricochet or Halo)
- 9 volt battery
Conclusion
-This gun is one of the most popular guns out on the Paintball market today and its no surprise to me why that is so. The gun has a dew flaws but ICD, a great company by the way, fixed those flaws with the newer bushmasters. I commend ICD with this great gun for the players who have just sold their low-end blow back markers and want to get a more serious gun. If you are one of these people then this gun is for you. It doesn't require a huge knowledge of paintball mechanics and there are always friendly people online in forums on pbnation.com and pbreview.com to help you. Have fun!
